Several regions across Greece’s mainland as well as islands in the Aegean and the Ionian Sea are at Very High Risk of Fires on Saturday, August 11th 2018. According to a statement issued by the country’s Civil Protection Agency, Very High Risk (Level 4) and High Risk (Level 3) of wildfires is due to strong blowing winds.
At Very High Risk are the regions of Attica, Sterea, Peloponnese, islands in the Ionian Sea and the Aegean Sea.

High Risk of Fire for:
The Dodecanese islands, North Ionian and Aegean islands, Halkidiki, Thrace, South Central Greece and Epirus.
For regions marked with Yellow, there is High Risk for Fires (Level 3). Blue marks regions with Medium Risk and Green with Low Risk.
Reasons for the risks of fire are the strong summer North winds (meltemia) that will be blowing 6-7 Beaufort and locally up to 8-9 Beaufort.
It is the eight Risk of Fire warning issued by the Civil Protection in a row.
The Civil Protection urges citizens to be very careful and avoid acts outdoors that can cause fire by negligence, such as throwing lit cigarettes, burning dry vegetation and small branches (twigs) and branches or cleaning residues, using sparking machines such as circular saws, welding devices, the use of outdoor grills etc.
The Civil Protection reminds that setting fields on fire is prohibited during the “anti-fire season” in the summer months.
In the event of a fire, citizens should immediately notify the Fire Service by calling number <199>
