Halkidiki: Homes evacuated in Sarti due to wildfire out of control

Homes and summerhouses have been evacuated in Sarti resort in Sithonia peninsula, Halkidiki, after a wildfire got out of control.

The fire broke out in a difficult to access forest area in Platanitsi at 6 o’ clock Thursday morning. Due to the strong blowing wind, it soon got out of control.

By 8 o’ clock, the blaze had approached the forest area above Sarti. Due to thick smoke, the Fire Service ordered the evacuation of homes and summer houses.

Deputy major of Sithonia, Paris Ntemplas told athens news agency, that there is no electricity and phone land lines are cut. He expressed concern that without electricity there would be soon problems also with the water supply.

Police has interrupted traffic on the land road Agios Nikolaos – Sarti.

There are currently 30 fire trucks and 4 Canadair aircraft operating in the area.
