In a big scale operation Greek police cleared the camp of Indignant Greeks in the early morning hours of Saturday. While the Indignant Greeks were sleeping, Athens municipality employees in the presence of prosecutor and police forces started removing the camp tents and banners and load them on trucks. There was no opposing reaction by the Indignant campers who were caught by surprise. Well, not a very big surprise, as Athens mayor Giorgos Kaminis has repeatedly made pleas for the end of the camp on Syntagma square and had also announced he would clear it.
Four Greeks, two French, one German and one Rumanian were detained for violation of the environment pollution. The operation lasted four hours, the camp goods filled twenty trucks. The next morning municipality workers started cleaning the rest of the camp.

The anti-austerity protesters had been camping at the Square, opposite the parliament building, right in the heart of the city, for two months. The camp was set in late May and thousands protested on a daily basis against the government’s austerity measures.
However the violent incidents of June 28th and 29th, the temperatures rising up to 37-40 degrees and the peak of the summer holiday season reduced the number of protesters down to a few dozen campers.
Is this the end of the Greek “Indignant” movement? September will show, when Greeks return from holidays and temperatures will start dropping again…
