As if the pressure ahead the new austerity measures were not enough, conspiracy theorists from the USA jumped and landed in our lives as well. An commentary with the title”Greece: Don’t Discount the Role of Military” the author claims some coup possibilities in the debt-ridden country. No, do not expect a thorough research report on the spot, among rolling tanks, fired bullets and shouting commandos. The author makes a kind of an economic analysis, quotes some old CIA reports – which on their part were not convincing – and claims at the end
“And austerity would cause yet more chaos on Greek streets and give the military yet more incentive to intervene.
Especially if its own position was being eroded.
Is a military coup likely in Greece? Maybe not. But it’s a possibility that can’t be discounted. And if that were to happen, how happy would the European Union be to have a military dictatorship as part of its club?”
What I didn’t understand reading the article is whether the military will intervene to combat the riots and protect the government, or the other way around. However more likely than a coup is a new government. A cross party government, a National Unity Government. Possible through early elections. Cheaper and very democratic too, through Papandreou’s resignation. Over the weekend three government ministers spoke of the possibility early elections, one of them even proposed Referendum on the measures and early elections.
Who does believe that the PASOK will win any elections? Who does believe that the military can afford a coup? I wonder, if the tanks’ tanks are filled up….

the comments were more informed and entertaining then the article. journalism today in all the countries is about as serious as a star channel weather report. we use to say kafeneio talk about half arsed stories like that now it seems you get better reporting from the kafeneio than from any media outlet.
