A powerful earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale jolted the Western of Crete on Saturday afternoon. The earthquake occurred at 4:11 p.m. on Saturday in the sea area 63 km western of Chania and 23 km below the sea surface. According to Greek Geodynamic Institute, the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.3R, while according to the U.S. Geological Survey, the magnitude was 6.4R.Local media report of minor material damages in houses and shops and no injuries.

Local media cretalive reports of a middle-aged man who jumped from the balcony of his home as he panicked. The apartment was at the first floor of a building, the man got injuries but not serious.
Glass-windows and balconies in the old city of Chania were damaged.
Landslides occurred in Therissos. A public bus has been reportedly trapped between rocks and stones.

The tremor was powerful and of duration and it was reportedly felt also by people driving cars.
The earthquake was felt also on the Cyclades island group, in Athens and other areas in Greece.
PS KTG did not feel the earthquake as it was swimming in Athens. One little wave that disturbed the calm sea as the time of the earthquake…. that’s wasn’t a tiny tsunami, was it?
