Nikos Romanos stopped “hunger-strike”; President Papoulias intervened to PM Samaras

Nikos Romanos stopped the hunger-strike after the last minute ameliorating amendment by Justice Minister Charalambos Athanasiou. Private Megat TV reported that “Nikos Romanos is going slowly to start eating again.”

According to his physicians, Romanos health was at deteriorating condition and a high risk of fatal heart attack after 30 days on hunger-strike. He had begun also a “thirst-strike” on Wednesday morning, before the last minute amendment by the Justice minister.

Nikos Romanos, 21, has been convicted to 15 years imprisonment for armed bank-robbery. He is a declared anarchist. He was granted the right to enter university exams but denied the possibility to attend classes.

In a rare case of presidential intervention, President karolos Papoulias has reportedly called PM Antonis Samaras this morning and asked him to find a solution to Nikos Romanos case. Previously, SYRIZA-leader Alexis Tsipras had contacted Papoulias and coalition government partner and deputy PM Evangelos Venizelos per phone.

PS Finally logic and common sense prevailed 🙂
