Unknown gunmen opened fired at the Israeli Embassy in Psychiko suburb of Athens in the early morning hours of Friday. In a brief statement Greek Police said that “54 bullet casing 7.62mm from Kalashnikov weapons were collected from the attack scene” and “that nobody was injured.”
According to Greek media, there were five gunmen, two on a motorcycle and three in a car. The attack took place short after 3 a.m. under a heavy rain. Within ten minutes, police forces arrived at the embassy but the gunmen were gone. According to reports, some of the bullets hit windows of the building, some other were stuck in the walls.
Police closed off the road ourside the embasy and forensics experts have been searching the area. Authorities investigate material form the closed surveillance security cameras.
So far, no organization has claimed responsibility for the attack.
A similar gunfire took place last year, on December 30th 2013: gunmen fired shots at the residence of the German Ambassador, while the diplomat was inside. The attack took place also short after 3 a.m. Nobody was injured.
“According to Greek anti-terrorism police, the guard at the ambassador’s residence saw four people open fire using Kalashnikov rifles. The perpetrators fired at the gate and the walls and fled before police arrived at the spot. Some 60 bullet casings were reportedly found, while around 20 bullets were found stuck in the steel gate.”(more here)
A small left-wing terrorist group called “Popular Fighters” had claimed for the similar gunfire.
UPDATE: According to news website Zougla.gr, based on the found casings, police has identified that the same Kalashnikov weapons were used in the attack against the residency of German ambassador.
