Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann has resigned after losing the support of Social Democratic party colleagues. Faymann came to power in 2008 but has faced criticism within his party since the far right won the first round of presidential elections last month.
He told a hastily convened press conference that Austria needed a chancellor who had his party “fully behind him”.
He called for the government to make a new start.
“I’m stepping down from my role as chancellor and SPO leader,” he said, acknowledging he had lost support within the party.
Cap on asylum
In his statement he singled out the challenges of bringing down unemployment, as well as social cohesion and the refugee crisis.
Earlier this year, Mr Faymann yielded to pressure from a conservative coalition partner to cap the number of people allowed to claim asylum in Austria after the arrival in 2015 of more than 90,000 asylum seekers.
That decision prompted criticism from trade unionists and the SPO’s youth wing, BBC Vienna correspondent Bethany Bell reports.

Simple as that. A proof of what I said will be Austria not changing its current immigration policy in the near future unless something happens.

But lets “play the ball”: these are the numbers from today INSA poll (Germany): 64% of Germans dont want Merkel to go for her 4th chancellorship. CDU/CSU down to 30%, AFD up to 15% (recalling numbers as I write so they can be +/- up or down). Those numbers would be considered impossible just a half year ago!

Your implicit answer seems to be that there are a lot of other fascists around. Well, if you want an answer then perhaps you should ask a question first! My “implicit answer” had following point: you cant explain whats happening in Europe by blaming everyone as “Nazi”. There is something different going on “under the radar”. The old european societies (we call them nations) are beginning to defend themselves. Why? Because people like you – idelogically blinded – have brought them on the edge of abyss. For decades you have allowed immigration into Europe without limits. Today there are more than 50 NO GO areas in Sweden. More than 100 NO GO areas in France. Entire quarters of european cities are too dangerous (for a native one) to enter. Hell, they are even dangerous for the police to enter! You didnt manage the most important aspect of immigration – thats the integration policy. Migrants from 2nd or 3rd generation are committing suicide attacks. And you – so called european intellectual elites – think that by naming them “Europeans” you will blind the eyes of public.
