On the occasion of the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin in Greece, I feel I have to tell you the story about the legend of the “Blond Nation” that will save Greece.
The legend has its origins in the 400 years of Ottoman occupation of Greece and the wars of Peter I the Great and Catherine II the Great against the Sublime Porte, In their many attempts, the Russians looked as if they were helping the occupied nation with which they shared a common religion to gain independence from the “Ottoman yoke”. But in fact, the Russian Empire was following its own geopolitical interests.
The roots of the “Blond race savors” are lost in the mists of times of the Greek Orthodox history and the legend is attributed to prophecies of Greek-Orthodox monks and saints and even to the early Christian times.
According to Ekklisia/ChurchOnline.gr the inscription on the grave of Constantine the Great (272-337 AD) allegedly read:
“The blond race with its agents will vanquish the entire Ismael and get the Eptalofo [7-hills, Istanbul] along with other privileges.”
As legends do not need to match historical dates and facts or be authenticated, I am unable to tell you whether the Blond race narrative was also alive before the Ottomans conquered Constantinople in 1453.
But in the 18th century the legend has been much attributed to Monk St. Cosmas of Aetolia (1714-1779) who started preaching after the failed Orlov Revolt of 1770 in Peloponnese. A revolt against the Ottoman Empire provoked by the Russian Orlov brothers with the support of Catherine II of the Russian Empire.
The blond race that will help Greece to even gain back The City (Poli), the capital of byzantine Empire, Constantinople, today’s Istanbul.
Cosmas of Aetolia: “The great battle will be in the City. There, all nations will gather, and so much blood will be spilled as for a calf to swim in. Winner will be the blond race. We will be with the blond race”.
Elder Joseph from Vatopaidi Monastrery in Mt Athos: “Russia suddenly invades Turkey […] and will force Turkey to withdrawal.”
Also Andrew of Constantinople (died in 936), a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church is said to have predicted:
“But I think also the blonde race whose name begins with the seventeenth letter of the alphabet (R) will inrush and cuts and push the sinners to the ground.”
An old Greek folk song allegedly from the times of the Ottoman occupation was urging the people to be patient until the Russians would come:
«Ακόμη τούτη η άνοιξη, ραγιάδες, ραγιάδες, όσο να “ρθει ο Μόσκοβος να φέρει το σεφέρι…»
“One more spring, slaves, slaves, until the Moskwer comes in military expedition…”
*ραγιάς is in fact an Arab word meaning “flock”, “herd” but used in the sense of “slave, servile dependent.” It was used by the Ottomans for the non-Muslims like Greeks, Armenians, Jews and Frangolevantines.
Of course, until now the Russian Blond Race did not do much to help Greece politically or economically neither did it send army to Turkey to help us gain back Constantinople.
One of the reasons for the failing help could be seen in the 72 years of communism regime in the USSR and all its leaders like Stalin, Khrushchev, Brezhnev, Gorbachev who were definitely not blond but dark- or grey-haired and in addition they were certainly Atheists.
In contrast: Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin thrilled the Greek Orthodox nationalists and revived the “Blond race'” myth not only because he is blond but also because he is not leading a communist country which was the nightmare for the Greek right-wing faithful.

Myths are very entertaining and can be interpreted in many ways. For sure something is brewing. The Cold War is being revived cause empires want to play their little games (with big consequences) But nobody will “come to the rescue” out of altruistic reasons. It the world of geopolitics small countries are merely pawns.
