Chios: Refugees protest slow asylum procedures, EASO staff on 24h strike

Dozens of refugees and migrants blocked the two entrances to the hot spot of VIAL on the island of Chios to protest extremely slow procedures in processing asylum.

According to protesters, “the Asylum service checks only five asylum applications per day and this increases the risk that they will be struck there for many months.”

A similar protest was staged yesterday, Wednesday, with the effect that staff working at the hot spot could not enter or exit for three hours. There was some tension when the protest started due to the presence of riot police but the situation calmed down after negotiations between protesters and police.

Indicative of the bad atmosphere in the hot spot is that the asylum staff  provided by the European Asylum Support Office (EASO) decided to refrain from work for 24 hours due to asylum seekers’ protest on Wednesday.

According to Greek official data, there are currently 4,174 refugees and migrants on the island of Chios, the hot spot has a capacity for 1,100 people only.

  1. The Australian government is releasing more land to build housing to relieve a chronic housing shortage. Maybe the Greek government should do the same to help solve the refugee crisis.

    • The refugees are locked in camps on Aegean islands by decision of the EU governments. Obviously, there is neither land no finance to accommodate them, and the intention of the EU is to deny them asylum in Europe and deport them all to Turkey. They are prevented from doing so by international law, EU law, the European Convention on Human Rights, and Greek law. Yet they are determined to break all of these laws, because European politicians at this time are openly fascist.
