Greece has decided: Demy and the song This Is Love will represent Greece in the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. The national finals were held on Monday at the studios of state broadcaster ERT in Athens. The decision was determined through televoting by Greek public and representatives of diaspora Greeks in nine countries.
Demy presented three songs. This Is Love was selected at 70% by the Greek public and at 30% by the diaspora Greeks representatives.
The song was composed by Dimitris Kontopoulos. Lyrics: Romi Papadea, John Ballard. Papadea is Demy’s sister.
The jury committees in Belgium, Georgia, Italy, Austria, Ukraine, Armenia and Germany voted in favor of This Is Love. Azerbaijan voted for When Then Morning Comes Around.
Last week, the song was leaked in the internet, however organizer ERT decided that the song was still eligible to compete.
Demy told media that she was very pleased about the result. “We loved all three songs,” she said revealing that this was her favorite.
“The song combines in a very nice way all the elements I would love to. It has feeling, you can express it in the performance, it is dance where it has to, the ERT Symphonic Orchestra on the bridges, it has everything, ” Demy said after the voting.
Who is Demy?
Demy was born in Athens, she is 25 years old.
At the age of five, she started taking piano lessons, later also vocal lessons. Jazz, Soul, Rock and Roll, and RandB are cited as musical influences. Her first favorite song growing up was “I’m Like a Bird” by Nelly Furtado.
Her professional music career started in 2011.
In 2012 MAD Video Music Awards, she won the award for Best New Artist and 2 other awards.
Apart from singing professionally, she is also a law school student in Athens. She has stated that she still aspires to finish law school, and not devote herself to music exclusively, even though her popularity as a musician is increasing
Greece has won only once the Eurovision song contest, in 2005 with Elena Paparizou.
The 62nd Eurovision song contest will be held in May. The semi-finals are scheduled for 9. May, the finals for 13. May 2017.
