Incident at Greece -Turkey borders, Greeks arrest one Turkish citizen

Greek soldiers arrested a Turkish citizen who illegally entered the country through the border crossing of Kastanies. Turkish soldiers fired in the air the prevent 3 Turks from entering Greece.

According to preliminary media information, the three Turkish citizens tried to enter Greece on foot in the early morning hours of Tuesday. One of them started to run and did not stop when the Turkish soldiers fired in the air in order to stop him. He kept running and stopped once he was in Greece. He surrendered to Greek borders guards. He was arrested by the police and removed from the border crossing.

According to state broadcaster ERT TV, an alcohol test on the detainee turned positive.

He reportedly told Greek authorities he was of Kurdish origin and resident of Adana in Southeast Turkey. He was carrying a passport however without a visa.

He is reportedly 40 years old.

According to latest information, the Turkish citizens who tried to enter Greece were four and three of them were arrested by the Turkish authorities.

Greek authorities are on alert.

The incident takes place at a time where relations between Greece and Turkey are tensed due to the arrest of two Greek soldiers on March 1st who entered Turkey by mistake. The two are still in Turkish custody awaiting trial. Twenty days later, the Turkish prosecutor has not completed yet the case file.
