CERN’s Cancer Therapy Center ends up into a politically motivated dispute

Greece has not rejected CERN’s proposal to establish a Center for Protonic Therapy for Cancer Patients in Greece , nor is there any relevant study from Universities or research centers in our country for the establishment of such a center in our country,” the General Secretariat for Research and Technology (GSRT) said in a statement on Monday, dismissing the claims by Professor Evangelos Gazis.

The GSRT speaks of statements by “misinformed scientists, who with unsubstantiated claims, speak of  project rejection on behalf of the State” and of “famous scientists who speak publicly as it seems only for their personal strategies.”

Explaining the reasons why Greece remains an observer in the “South Eastern Europe International Institute for Sustainable Technologies” (SEEIIST) project, the GSRT writes that the cost of such an investment is high, the Proton Particle Accelerator method is still at experimental stage of efficiency and had limited application.

There are no controlled trials to prove the superiority of the method when compare dot other treatments, the statement writes adding that the total investment is estimated 140 to 170 million euros.

The GSRT notes further that the other member states have only declared their intention to have the facility in their countries.

Professor Gazis accused the Greek state of having rejected the 100-million-euro project, missing the opportunity to have an innovative cancer center established in Greece.

The Proton Particle Accelerator developed by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) has a small size and light weight meaning that is can be set up in hospitals to produce radioactive isotopes for medical imaging and destroy targeted cancer cells without affecting neighboring tissues.

After the GSRT statement, Professor Gazis made another statement, a CERN associate at Dimokritos Research Center defended the Greek state position that the method has not proved itself yet, the union of public hospitals workers (POEDIN) that is attacking the government at any given chance issued a furious statement speaking of “shame” and accusing the government of “putting the primary surpluses over the lives of cancer patients” … and the whole issue ended up where all such controversies usually end in Greece: in a politically motivated dispute where the average John Greek cannot make a single clue.

  1. No KTG you are not right here. If one sees the answer of Prof. Gazis, it is more than convincing that we are facing the case of the usual corrupt politicians who realised that accepting to house the CERN Centre could benefit the people of the colony. This, of course, is unacceptable; it may interfere with the demolition plan of the Troika!
