97% of Greece’s bathing water has “excellent” water quality, says EU

An overwhelming number – 97% – of bathing water in Greece is of excellent quality, the annual report released by the European Environment Agency (EEA) and the European Commission said.

The report was compiled using information from more than 21 000 bathing waters in the 28 EU Member States, under the provision of EU’s Bathing Water Directive.

The EEA report assesses bathing water quality in 2018, indicating where the quality of bathing water is expected to be good in 2019.
Greece – Bathing Water Quality in the Season 2018
According to the report, Greece identified and reported 1,598 bathing waters , which is
7.2% of all bathing waters in Europe.
The bathing waters are quality classified according to the two microbiological parameters (Escherichia coli and Intestinal enterococci) defined in the Bathing Water Directive.
98.1% of reported bathing waters are in line with the minimum quality standards of the Directive, thus classified “sufficient” or better.
The report links to some Greek pages about Bathing Water Qualities, pages that have not been updated since 2016, though.
KTG usually publishes the annual report by the National Center for Ecological Research PAKOE listing clean bathing waters but also those where swimming is forbidden. However, the PAKOE report 2019 has not been published yet. It is usually published towards the end of June or beginning of July.
