Earthquake rattles the island of Rhodes with 5.1R on Oct3

An earthquake with magnitude 5.1 on Richter scale rattled the island of Rhodes on Thursday morning. The earthquake occurred at 07:45 a.m. Its epicenter was in the sea area 37km South-East off the island.

The focal point was 16,8 km. It was of long duration, local media report.

Two-three aftershocks followed with the strongest at 3 R.

No injuries or material damages have been reported , so far.

The tremor was particularly felt not only on the island but also in areas of the South-West Cost of neighboring Turkey.

Greek seismologists are closely monitoring the phenomenon and seem reassuring.

“There is no reason of concern,” seismologist and director of the Greek Ge0-Dynamics Institute, Gerasimos Papadopoulos, told Skai TV.

In the same wavelength was also the Direction of Earthquake Planning and Prevention Authority, Efthymios Lekkas.

‘There is no connection to the fault line of Anatolia,” he said, pointing out that that the earthquake occurred in the same tectonic area as the earthquake end August.

Lekkas added that they expect aftershocks of 4.6 and 4.7 R.
