Workers at Greece’s Public Power Corporation (PPC/DEH) started their 48-hour strikes at midnight Tuesday. the strikes are spread across the country, with the exception of the island of Rhodes that was declared in “state of emergency” due to the floods on Monday.
The strikes are repetitive and will last until midnight Thursday, November 28, 2019.
The strikes by Union GENOP-DEH take place as the Greek Palriament is set to vote a legislation for the privatization of parts of the public company as well as clipping PPC workers rights, as new workers will be hired with temporary contracts only.
According to a union statement the legislation abolishes the collective bargain, creates two-categories workers, prepares to close down the lignite plants, will privatize the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (DEDDHE) and proceed to further privatization of the Independent Power Transmission Operator (ADMHE).
GENOP-DEH has called for a protest rally at Syntagma Square in downtown Athens at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
