Sakellaropoulou highlights importance of constitution and democracy

In her first public statements after her election by the Greek Parliament, Ekaterini Sakellaropoulou highlighted the importance of the Constitution and democracy and addressed global issues such as human rights and the migration and the climate crisis.

She underlined that she was fully aware of the weighty responsibility she was undertaking.

“Our country is a modern state governed by the rule of law and a factor of stability, growth and culture. An essential prerequisite for it to continue to be such is to ensure its territorial integrity and its sovereign rights,” she said in her short speech of political importance.

“I look forward to a society that respects the rights described in the Constitution, the UN Charter of Fundamental Human Rights and the European Convention on Human Rights,” she said,.

She referred to major problems that need to be addressed on a global scale, such as the economic crisis, the climate crisis, the displacement of populations, inequality and the protection of the weak and a general decline in the rule of law.

Sakellaropoulou called for a society that, supported by its long democratic tradition, will heal the hurts of the past and look to the future with optimism.

“For this future, I can assure you that I will give all my strength to fulfill my constitutional role,” she said.

The Greek Palriament elected Sakellaropoulou  her with a broader majority of 261 votes in a Palriament of 300 seats. She will assume office on March 13.
