People rushed outside their homes, power was cut, houses collapsed, landslides occurred and rocks fell on the provincial road network roads were damaged when an earthquake measuring 5.6 R stroke near the city of Parga in western Greece in the early morning hours of Saturday.

The epicenter was 14 km North-East of Parga, in Kanalaki, and had a focal depth of 10 km. A 4.3 R was presided short before midnight Friday.

Three people were injured, local media report.


The earthquake was particularly felt in Thesprotia and Preveza, Ioannina, Art and Corfu.

Gerasimos Chouliaras, Research Director of the Athens Geodetic Institute, posted on Facebook: “We are monitoring the evolution of the 5.6-magnitude Richter earthquake from the Geodetic Institute’s seismological network. The earthquake in western Greece was expected following the seismic activity in Parga and Karditsa in recent months, and I am not anticipating a larger development at this time, don’t worry. ”
“We are at the peak of the phenomenon. We are concerned as it started with a low 4.2 Richter at midnight and reached 5.6 Richter at 2:49 in the morning,” head of the Earthquake Planning and Prevention Efthimios Lekkas told state-run news agency amna.
“We are monitoring the phenomenon and for the moment we are skeptical,” he said adding that the earthquake occurred at the well-known Paramythia fault line.
