Coronavirus Greece: 2,192 cases, 103 deaths; gradual decline of serious cases

Greece’s health authorities announced on Wednesday 22 new confirmed cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours. The total infection cases stand at 2,192. It is the second day in a row that the new confirmed cases are below 25, a sign that the coronavirus spread in Greece is gradually declining as health experts have been saying in the last couple of days.

72 patients are intubated in hospitals intensive care units, their average age is 68. Among them are 15 women. 89% of the ICU patients have underlying health issues or are at least 70 years of age.

A total of 29 people have been discharged from ICUs, so far.

Every time a patient exits the ICU is a very special moment not only for him or her but also for the health personnel. “This is not just a video recording, this is a live recording of the victory of life over death,” wrote Aimilios Vougiouklakis, the general manager of Asklipiio hospital in southern Athens. It is the second COVID-19 patient to be discharge from the hospital ICU.

The number of deaths has reached 103 after a 75-year-old woman passed away in AHEPA hospital in Thessaloniki on Wednesday evening. She had reportedly underlying health problems (diabetes).

Among the dead are 29 women. 89.2% of the dead had underlying health issues or their average age was 70 or over.

A total of 50,771 tests have been conducted since the outbreak of the virus in Greece in late February.

From the 3 infected infants, one had been discharged form the hospital. The 15-month-old girl remains in ICU, her conditions is described as critical but stable.

Spokesman of the National Health Organization and Professor for Infectious Diseases Sotiris Tsiodras said on Tuesday, that the curve of the coronavirus is flattening.

“I would like to say clearly that during this period there is a gradual reduction in the number of treated cases and the number of serious cases.”

He stressed that the factor Ro is below number 1 and attributed this to the restriction measures imposed in the country.

Ro pronounces R-naught is a crucial metric for understanding an epidemic, is measuring how quickly it spreads. One way to do that is to look at how many people an average person with the virus infects. The coronavirus has an R0 of roughly 2 to 2.5, meaning that each new person spreads the disease to about 2.2 people on average.

Denmark, for example that is about to start lifting lockdown measures has “R zero” Tsiodras said on Wednesday.

He refrained from making predictions about the development of the pandemic in the country, whether it has been overcome or it will fade away by the end of the month.
