Greece weather: From record heat wave to rain and storms warning

From record heat wave in May to weather warning with heavy rainfalls and thunderstorms and temperature drop of even 10-12 degrees Celsius.

Greece’s National Meteorological Service, EMY, issued a weather warning for Thursday, May 21, 2020.

The bad weather front will strike the western, central and northern parts of the country with heavy rainfalls and thunderstorms, locally hail-fall, temporarily strong winds and a significant temperature drop.

EMY’s Forecast for Thursday, May 21

The bad weather front will strike with locally very intense phenomena as of noon, Epirus, Macedonia, Thessaly, the Sporades islands, Sterea and Evia.

Weakening of the weather phenomena are expected in Epirus and West Sterea early in the evening and in other affected areas in the early morning hours of Friday, May 22.

Generally, temperatures remain high and are forecast to reach up to 40°C in eastern Crete.

Sahara dust will continue to affect the country and will start gradually withdrawing towards the end of the week.

 

Record high temperatures over 40°C in May

The unprecedented for the season heat wave over the weekend, led to record high temperatures.

According to National Observatory of Athens, the highest temperature were recorded near Heraklio, Crete (Plora 41.8°C and Gortyna 40.8°C ) and in Sparti (40.3°C), Peloponnese

The highest temperature in Greek capital Athens was recorded in Thiseio (37°C) both on Saturday and Sunday.

According to the NOA records that go back to 1860, the temperature has only exceeded 35°C in May on 18 occasions in the past 160 years, the last time in 1990.

Meteorologists soaring temperatures at this time of the year is one of the key manifestations of climate change in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea.
