Weather was quite fair on Tuesday morning but it made a U-turn at noon: clouds quickly gathered over Athens and the suburbs on Tuesday noon, thunder was heard and lightning was seen in the horizon. Within minutes a heavy rainstorm started to strike accompanied by gale-force wind. The rain was so dense and powerful that view to the opposite buildings was difficult.

After days with temperatures reaching up to 40 degrees Celsius, the weather deteriorated badly although we move towards the end of May.

The National Observatory of Athens on Tuesday issued an alert warning of powerful thunderstorms in several regions of the Greek mainland, as well as in the eastern Peloponnese, Crete, the islands of the northern and eastern Aegean Sea.
According to the meteo service of the NOA, hail-falls are also possible on Tuesday noon and afternoon as well as of the evening hours.

The stormy weather front is forecast to sweep across Greece from Tuesday noon (May 26) until Wednesday morning, at least.
Gale-fore winds will be blowing with intensity of up to 7-8 Beaufort in the Ionian Sea and up to 6 Beaufort in the Aegean. Powerful gusts are forecast as well.
