Danid, a firefighetr from Sierra Leone and asylum seeker on the island of Samos, is volunteering at the local fire service, providing information to the camp residents on fire risks and setting up a group of volunteers at the camp.
Before leaving his country to seek asylum, Danid was working as a firefighter in the the Fire Service in Freetown. Now he assists the Samos fire brigade with his knowledge and experience.
It was the UNHCR on Samos that made the contact between the asylum seeker and the fire service, notes Fire Service coordinator, Ioannis Stamoulis.
Danid offered to help voluntarily, informing other residents of the Identification and Accommodation Center about the dangers of using fire and to help set up a group of volunteers.
Last April, dozens of tents were destroyed and over 100 people lost their accommodation due to fires in the hot spot of Samos.
