US State Dept urges Turkey to avoid escalating tension “in disputed waters”

The US State Department has called on Turkey to cease all provocative actions in the eastern Mediterranean, a spokesperson told Greek reporters at a press briefing on Tuesday. The US call is good if it wasn’t only a small detail: “disputed waters..”

“The United States is aware that Turkey has issued a NAVTEX for research in disputed waters in the Eastern Mediterranean. We urge Turkish authorities to halt any plans for operations and to avoid steps that raise tensions in the region,” reporters were told.

Turkey issued a NAVTEX on Tuesday, blocking the sea area southeast of Kastelorizo island to carry out seismic surveys until August 2.

The move angered Greece that considers the surveys are carried out “inside the Greek continental shelf” and Greek Armed Forces were set on alert.

PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis told German FM Heiko Maas that EU sanctions is the only way to Turkey’s ongoing provocations.

And Washington describes the area as “disputed waters”?

PS I don’t think so…

  1. A Biden victory in November will put Erdogan on notice. If he was in office now, you would even see an American ship involved already and there would be no understanding of these waters as being disputed.

I hope the Greek government has already raised issue with the Pentagon on the inaccuracy and danger of that quote.

You will see a much firmer stance against Turkey once Trump is out.

I really hope Greek Americans understand this.
