Three treasure hunters die in makeshift well near Athens

Tragedy with treasure-hunters near Athens. The bodies of three men were recovered from a makeshift shaft early Thursday morning. The three men aged 47, 48 and 58, were found in an 8-meter deep well in Varybobi village in the north of the Greek capital.

The men had gone to the area together with three other friends. When the latter lost contact with the three inside the well, they called the Fire Service.

12 firefighters with 4 trucks and necessary equipment rushed to the area around 5:30 in the morning. One and a half hour later, they located and retrieved the bodies.

Firefighters found an improvised ladder that was reaching the bottom of the well where the victims had also placed a generator. An improvised pipe was supposed to get the earth gasses out.

According to first indications, the men were suffocated because of the fumes.

It is believed that the group was hunting for a treasure or gold coins as there are many archaeological findings in the area. It is still unknown how the group found the well, which is located near the church of the Holy Trinity.

Police has reportedly detained the three friends, two men and one woman.

The bodies have been transferred to a hospital in Athens, an autopsy will determine the exact causes of their death.

In May another four treasury hunters died in an old German bunker by the seaside resort of Loutraki. The four men were 35 to 70 years old.
