A new jump in coronavirus infections on Tuesday with 121 new confirmed cases in the last 24 hours. No new deaths. The total number of infections has reached 4,855. According to Greece’s health authorities 12 of the new cases have been detected among travellers and the remaining are among the domestic population.
The majority of the new cases are again in Attica and northern Greece, with Thessaloniki to top today’s list with 47 new infections.
Ro=1 said the country’s top epidemiologist, Infectious Diseases professor Sotiris Tsiodras who appeared again on a live briefing after a break of 72 days. Ro=1 means that one infected person infects another one, he added. If Ro is below 1 infections decrease but if not, they increase.
Tsiodras said that the recent increase of infections is basically due to the population mobility, the not observance of crowding measures and the increased checks.
He stressed that infections have moved to younger ages, when compared to beginning of the outbreak where moistly elderly were infected. Because majority of young people do not have underlying health issues, hospitalization is not necessary.
Tsiodras added that a significant part of recent infections are “asymptomatic.”
The Greek government imposed the mandatory use of mask also in open-air spaces of ferries and ships on Monday.
Despite the cases surge in the last days, the government and the imposition of new restrictions , the Shipping Ministry increased on Sunday the capacity on ships and ferries to 80% and 85% from 60% and 65%.
Tsiodras stressed that the committee of epidemiologists at the Health Ministry is “concerned” and that closely monitors the situation.
Media report that Interior Minister Takis Theodoriakos has requested rolling working hours and tele-work for the public sector.

The new 121 new cases on Monday have been detected:
5 at the entry points in Greece.
7 more travellers voluntarily sought laboratories for Covid-19 test in the country after they developed some symptoms. They were tested positive.

8 Halkidiki – 5 of them were guests at a baptism ceremony
8 in Larissa – 1 of them is a doctor at the public hospital

Each 2 in Imathia and Serres
Each 1 in Kavala, Arkadia, Achaia, Drama, Evros, Evia, Kozani, Pella, Chio.
Among the new cases, 1 has been detected in a tax office and a nurse in a hospital in Thessaloniki.
A second player of PAOK FC has been tested positive.
The number of total infections from weddings in Thessaloniki and Alexandroupolis has increased to 45.

According to the Health Ministry statement on Tuesday, the daily growth from Monday to Tuesday is 2..6% from 1.7% the previous 24 hours.
54.6% of the total of infected are men.
Of the total coronavirus cases, 1,325 (27.3%) are related to travel abroad, 2,403 (49.5%) are related to an already known case. The rest are cases not related to travel or another known case or are still under investigation.
Average age of the infected in 49 with age range between 0 and 102.
The rolling average number of infections in the last 7 days is 83 from 34 last Tuesday, July 28.

Number of patients intubated in ICUs remains at 13. Among them are 3 women. Average age of the intubated patients is 69.
69.2% of intubated patients had underlying health issues and age over 70 years.
128 patients have been discharged from the ICUs since the beginning of the outbreak.

Among the deceased were 67 women. The average age of the deceased was 76 with range age between 35 and 102.
95.7% had underlying health issues and/or were over 70 years old.

Total coronavirus tests since the beginning of the outbreak in February is 599,709. Of them 6,796 (1.13%) were positive.
