Greece to construct new refugee & migrants centers on 3 islands

Greece will build three controlled-access refugee and migrants facilities on the islands of Samos, Kos and Leros in eastern Aegean Sea. For this purpose the European Union has approved 130 million euros. At the same time, Greece continues decongestion of the islands camps, while refugee and migrants flows have significantly decreased in the last four months.

The disbursement of 130 million euros for the construction of three controlled-access refugee and migrant facilities at the islands of Samos, Leros and Kos has been approved by the European Commission’s Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF), the Greek Ministry for Migration and Asylum reported on Monday.

In a letter to the Migration Ministry, the European Commission said “it welcomes the ministry’s efforts to address the migration crisis in Greece and fully recognizes the urgent need for this financial support.”

Refugee and migrants flows have significantly reduced in the last four months government spokesman Stelios Petsas said on Monday.

Decrease has reached 93.12% in April-July, he said adding the new arrivals were 859 in total compared to 12,363 in the same period last year.

Arrivals at Chios, Kos and Leros were zero, at Lesvos reduced by 85%, whole one boat with 8 onboard arrived at Samos in a period of 4 months.

Petsas said that decongestion of the islands continues. Transfers from the islands to the mainland increased by 354,42% in April-July when compared ot last year. 11,295 people were transferred in these 4 months of 2020, while the number was 3,186 in 2019.

The government spokesman described as “especially important” the decongestion in the hotspot of Moria that currently hosts 13,941 people from 18,615 beginning of the year.
