Stricter measures in Greece due to resurgence, incl “negative test” for…

The Greek government announced on Friday stricter emergency measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus after the recent surge of Covid-19 cases. Standing customers in bars are banned and so are religious processions. For travelers from Malta a negative Covid-19 test will necessary.

Following suggestions by the Committee of Infectious Diseases at the Health Ministry, the head of Civil Protection Nikos Hardalias, announced that travelers from Malta are required to show a negative result of molecular control (PCR) for Covid-19. The test will have to be carried out 72 hours before travellers’ entry to Greece.

The measure goes into force as of 00:01 Wednesday, 12. August 2020.

Following a relevant recommendation and in cooperation with the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, all  religious processions are suspended for the next time period, as well as all kinds of trade fairs that normally take place outside the churches.

Finally, the measure of banning standing customers in all nightclubs, bars, clubs, live music centers, bars-restaurants, cafes-bars, etc. is extended until 31. August 2020.  These facilities have the possibility to convert their use into facilities with tables and seats.

Bars, beach bars and clubs are considered as “coronavirus nests” due to crowding.

Greece’s Civil Protection imposed extraordinary restriction measures on the island of Poros in the Saronic Gulf as of today, 7. August 2020 and for ten days, due to an increased number of cases in the last days.

In an extraordinary meeting with local authorities on Friday afternoon, the head of Civil Protection reportedly warned that restrictions will be imposed in the country’s second biggest city Thessaloniki, if the number of coronavirus cases will not decrease. Deadline for the decision is August 15.

August is the peak of Greeks’ summer vacations and August 15 is associated with several local festivals and processions due to the Dormition of Virgin Mary.
