Greece records new spike of coronavirus with 269 cases in last 24 hours

Greece recorded again a new spike of coronavirus with 269 additional cases confirmed in the last 24 hours. According to health authorities on Thursday evening, the number of total infections have reached 7,934.

Authorities did not announce any additional death, however, a 72-year-old man died in a hospital in Thessaloniki after the official daily bulletin was issued. The latest fatality raised death toll to 236; some 20 Covid-19 patients died since August 12.

Also the number of intubated patients is in constant increase and reached 30 in the last 24 hours from 28 a day earlier.

The majority of the new cases announced on Thursday are again local residents, while 19 were detected among travelers.

Greek Civil Protection decided to impose additional restrictions on the island of Mykonos and Halkidiki peninsula, northern Greece, due to increased number of infections.

Head of Greek Civil Protection said on Tuesday that tourism was not to blame for the infections increase.

Of the total 7,934 cases recorded in Greece since the outbreak in late February  1,783 (22.5%) are related to travel abroad and 3,658 (46%) are related to already known case.

According to the official daily bulletin on Thursday, the number of intubated patients in ICUs increased to 30 (from 25 on Tuesday and 28 on Wendesday). Their average age is 68, among them are 7 women. 46.7% have underlying health problems or are aged over 70.

140 people have been discharged from ICUs since the start of the pandemic in Greece.

Officially the deaths are at 235. Of these, 82 were women. Their average age was 77 and 95.6% of the deceased had an underlying condition.

Rolling weekly average cases at 229 from 185 last Thursday.

Total tests since begin of outbreak is 816,450 with 8,752(1.7%) of them being positive. These data includes several tests carried out in one patient as well.

Tests in the last 24 hours: 12,168 with 2.2% of them positive.

The daily growth is at 3.5%.

Of the 269 new coronavirus cases, 250 are domestic and of them 22 are linked to recent travel within the country. Some are related to known clusters and/or recent confirmed cases.

11 of them were detected at entry points and another 8 travellers sought laboratories after they developed symptoms.

The remaining cases are

90 in Attica: of them 15 are linked to domestic travel

67 in Thessaloniki

15 in Cyclades

Each 8 in Lesvos and Pella

in Imathia

6 in Chania

Each 5 in Kilkis and Halkidiki

4 in Heraklio

Each 3 in Ioannina, Kefalonia, Kozani, Larisa, Fthiotida, Florina

A 6-month-old baby in Eordaia was tested positive to Covid-19 and so did the baby’s father.

Tested positive are a 10-year-old child and the child’s mother  also in the broader area of Ptolemaida, West Macedonia.

Six police officers at the Police Station of Omonia in downtown Athens have been place in isolation after a detainee was tested positive. In isolation are also all other detainees at the station.

The two coronavirus tests on a 17-year-old French national turned negative. The teenager was airlifted from the island if Kalymnos to Heraklio, Crete, early in the morning, due to fever and chest pain. He was considered as suspected coronavirus cases and was trasnferred inside a special negative pressure capsule.
