22 confirmed coronavirus cases in nursing home; 15 of them elderly

22 people have been infected with Covid-19 in a nursing home in Thessaloniki, the second in the same city in northern Greece within a week. 15 of the infected are elderly and 7 are employees.

Broader tests were immediately ordered after an 80-year-old developed fever on Tuesday.

The management of the nursing home in Evosmos reportedly immediately informed the National Health Care Organization EODY that sent health teams to carry out tests to all elderly and the employees.

Speaking to local media grtimes, the man in charge of the nursing home, first elder Georgios Milkas, said that the infected elderly are around 80 years old and that “they have mild symptoms.”

As they have also underlying health problems, the elderly were transferred to designated hospitals of Papageorgiou and Ippokatio in Thessaloniki.

The infected personnel was placed in isolation.

The remaining 30 elderly are in the nursing home, the not infected employees spent the night in a neighboring hostel to avoid contracting the virus.

EODY teams are scheduled to conduct new tests the remaining elderly and the personnel.

“Estia Papageorgiou” accommodates 45 elderly and has 25 people working in the facilities.

According to Skai TV, the nursing home has an operating church where people from the area visit. Father Georgios said that health authorities try to located the patient zero.

It is the second nursing home in Thessaloniki with an outbreak of coronavirus, after the one in Asvestochori where over 30 elderly were tested positive last week and six of them lost their life. The latest victims was an 88-year-old man with other underlying health problems. He died late on Tuesday, raising the coronavirus death toll in Greece to 233.
