Greece National Meteorological Service EMY issued a weather warning on Friday on the heatweave forecast for the next four days, August 29 – Sept 1, 2020. Temperatures are expected to rise up to 40 degrees Celsius. The peak of the extraordinary phenomenon at the end of August is expected to be on the last day of summer and the first day of autumn.
There is a special warning for Attica where the worst days are forecast to be Monday and Tuesday, August 31-September 1.
The following video shows the temperature change at an altitude of 1500 meters above Europe. This height is chosen to monitor the average temperature fluctuation. The video shows also the temperature fluctuation in Attica until Tuesday 01/09.
Temperatures have been pretty high in the last few days with an unpleasant atmosphere due to high levels of humidity, especially in Attica. It will be worse.
It is worth noting that we did not experience many heatwaves this summer, with the most striking one at the end of July.
EMY’s weather warning
According to EMY’s emergency warning, temperatures are expected to gradually rise in the coming days. The forecast reads:
A. Mainland
1. Saturday, August 29: up to 37-38° C
2. Sunday, August 30: up to 38° C, up to 39° C in central and southern regions.(
3. Monday, August 31: up to 39° C , in central and southern regions up to 40° C, probably also 41° C.
4. Tuesday, September 1: temperature drop by 3°-4° C in northern Greece, but temperature will remain at the same high levels as on the previous day in the rest of the Greek mainland.
B. Islands and Coastal areas
1. Saturday-Monday, August 29-31: 34-36° C, with exception of Cyclades where temperature will not exceed 33° C.
2. Tuesday, Sept 1: temperature drop by 3-4° C in the Ionian islands. However, the Aegean islands will maintain high temperature levels that will reach 37-38° C especially in the Dodecanese and the islands of the eastern Aegean Sea.
C. Attica
The highest maximum temperatures will be recorded on Monday, August 31, and Tuesday, Sept 1, and are expected to reach 38-39° C and probably 40° C locally. In the coast areas 2-3 degrees Celsius lower.
