Coronavirus infections surpassed the milestone of 10,000 after authorities announced 157 new cases on Sunday. The total infections stand at 10,134. Death toll rose to 262 in the last 24 hours. The latest fatality is a 60-year-old man hospitalized in Athens since March. He had underlying issues.
Of the new cases, 44 were detected among tourists.
Over the weekend the new registered daily cases ( 177 on Saturday and 1 more death) have been below 200 and it is not known whether they are due to fewer tests usually conducted over the weekend.
Breaking the quarantine
There have been several case of infected people who have broken the quarantine and traveled in the country.They all were fined with 5,000 euro.
Among them is reportedly:
- a gymnastic instructor who left an island on the Cyclades and traveled to Athens to resume work in a gym
- a 26-year-old who left Evaggelismos hospital after he was diagnosed with Covid-19
- a lawyer who traveled to his home island Mykonos while he should be in quarantine because a relative was tested positive. The man assured that he was never informed he should be in quarantine.
On Friday, the case of a 24-year-old became known. She traveled from Thessaloniki to Athens by train and by ferry to Santorini. She was informed that she was tested positive while on train and was instructed to seek a designed hospital. She didn’t. In the end she was taken back to Athens where she remains in isolation. Initially she and her mother told media that they were not sure that the virus exists. Their claims triggered an outrage on social media, “I want to apologize publicly to everyone, it was not something deliberate, it was an impulse of age,” the young woman told Star TV.
Measures and Concerns
The Greek Civil Protections has tightened restrictions on the islands of Zakynthos and Lesvos and imposed the regional unit of Imathia under the regime of increased surveillance.
The country’s health experts are highly concerned due to the sharp increase of infections and deaths in August. The age group mostly affected is those 20-30 and most of them asymptomatic.

According to the official daily bulletin on Sunday, 2078 (20.5%) of the total cases are related to travel abroad and 4448(43.9%) are related to already known infection case.
The number of intubated patients in ICUs stands at 35 ( yesterday 36). Their average age is 69, among them are 10 women. 51.4% have underlying health problems or are aged over 70.
147 people have been discharged from ICUs since the start of the pandemic in Greece.
Officially deaths are at 262. Of the deceased 93 were women. Their average age was 77 and 93.5% of the deceased had an underlying condition or/and was over 70 years old.
Rolling weekly average cases at 213 from 237 last week.
Total tests since begin of outbreak are 940,882.
Tests in the last 24 hours: 9,880 with 1,59% of them positive.

Two doctors at the hospital on Zakynthios were reportedly tested positive
