Several settlements and one monastery were evacuated short before Friday down in the area of Sofiko by Corinth after a huge fire in a forest area.
The fire broke out in the area of Agios Vlasis 10 minutes before 3 o’ clock in the morning and for currently unknown reasons.
Strong winds quickly spread the fire, the blaze front reached 4-5 km.
The Monastery of Agia Marina and settlements in the area were evacuated already before down. Police went door to door to wake up the rsidents and transfer them to safe areas.
Strong ground and air firefighting forces are operating in the area and have taken the fire partly under control, although winds are blowing with some 6 Beaufort.
88 firefighters with 23 fire trucks, four ground teams and water tankers are assisted by three planes and four helicopters.
Teams from the Fire Service in Corinth have visited the area and investigate possible arson.
Forest fires break out in the area of Sofiko each and every summer, early autumn in the last couple of years.
