All through the night, Medicane IANOS was swirling over the Ionian islands and western Peloponnese, with gale-force winds and heavy rainfalls. Mostly hit were the islands of Zakynthos, Kefalonia and Ithaca. Roof tops were swept away, electricity was cut and many boats sunk.
Winds reaching at times up to 12 Beaufort brought down power columns, caused outages and set out of operation meteorological stations.
The Fire Service received over 250 calls from the islands to pump water from flooded homes, remove fallen trees and other items swept away by the winds but also help people to another location. Another 30 calls for assistance came from areas in western Greece.
There have been “some damages but no injuries” head of Civil Protection Nikos Hardalias said on Friday morning, adding that crews are working to restore the power network.
The most powerful winds hit the three Ionian islands and Achaia, in North-West Peloponnese, where gusts exceeded 80 km/h.

A moored Swiss-flagged sailing boat was swept away by strong winds and smashed on a rocky shore in the sea area of Schinos, east of the island.
The two people on board managed to reach the shore by themselves and are in good health.

According to state boradcaster ERT, the Medicane phenomena are expected to hits the Ioanian islands for the next 6-9 hours.
