Greece recorded 399 new coronavirus cases and 3 more Covid-19 related deaths in the past 24 hours, health authorities announced on Tuesday.
The total cases have reached 20,541 and death toll increased to 420.
40 of the new cases on Monday were detected among tourists.
The Civil Protection imposed restrictions in the Regional unit of Achaia, north-western Peloponnese, and the Ioannina Municipality, in Epirus due to epidemiological load. The use of mask is compulsory in-and outdoors. The restrictive measures go into force from October 6 until October 12, 2020.
Many people wonder, why authorities do not make the use of mask compulsory outdoors also in Athens and Attica that has been constantly the highest daily positive cases in the last two weeks.
At the weekly briefing on Tuesday, Head of Civil Protection Nikos Hardalias said that “we are more cautious stricter in areas with less potential of the health system, always compared to Athens. The data in each region are completely different, especially for Ioannina and Patras where there are clear indications of supra-local and local spread of the virus.”
On the example of Ioannina in Epirus he said “we had 89 of the 101 active cases from the wider area in the municipality of Ioannina. At the same time, the characteristics in Patras were completely different. We had 83 cases throughout Achaia, of which 52 were in the capital, ie in the municipality of Patras, and in fact the rest were scattered in Achaia, with a large number of contacts and movements between municipalities and several of them health profile.”
Hardialias added that they “weigh the data every three days and the issue of measures is a dynamic issue which is based on many parameters.”
On his part, professor of Epidemiology and Health Ministry spokesman, Gikas Majorkinis said that “There is a very strong recommendation for the use of a mask everywhere [outdoors] in Attica. The difference is whether it will be supervised or not. The committee strongly recommends a mask especially in crowded places.”
Another issue that raises questions is the number of daily Covid-19 tests has been constantly decreasing. 6,003 tests in last 24 hours.
Average number of tests at 10,062 in the last week, while more were carried out in summer.
Last time tests were at today’s levels was on August 2 with 5,946.
However, none of the present reporters asked about the issue on Tuesday.
