The state prosecutor in Golden Dawn trial proposed on Monday that the sentences of those convicted to over 10 years imprisonment be suspended pending their convicts’ appeal. Exempted from sentence suspension should be the murderer of 33-year-old rapper Pavlos Fyssas, who was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Prosecutor Adamantia Oikonomou has proposed that the sentences for all those convicted be suspended and that no one including the leadership of the “criminal organization” serves jail time until their appeal.
In support of her proposal, the prosecutor argued that convicts’ residence is known, that they have complied with restrictions imposed on them, had not tried to flee and that they had a clean criminal record, with the exception of leader Nikos Michaloliakos.
Fyssas’ murderer, Giorgos Roupakias, is not legitimize to have suspension as he received life sentence, the prosecutor said.
Following the prosecutor’s proposal, the court adjourned for 30 minutes so that defense attorneys can prepare their statements.
Storng was the reaction of victims’ lawyers who accused the prosecutor of has become “a Golden Dawn attorney” and recalled that she had originally proposed the leadership acquittal from the “criminal organization” charges.
As expected, the prosecutor’s proposal shocked the public and triggered an outrage on social media with many internet users to demand her replacement.
Others expressed their strongest hope, that the Court will not accept the prosecutor’s proposals.
If proposals accepted by the Court, this will mean that the whole leadership of neo-nazi Golden Dawn will remain free until the appeal trial which could take another a couple of years.
