Thousands of runners from all over the world gave a dynamic presence in the Virtual Athens Marathon 2020, sending a message of victory over all adversity due to the pandemic.
The event, which took place in a virtual form, gathered a total of 6,700 participants from around the world. Among them were runners from Bermuda, Ecuador, Guatemala, Jordan, Indonesia, and even Australia.
The participants, although not able to travel to Athens to cover the classic route or distances of 5 and 10 km, ran safely in their country of residence, recorded their performance in the special application “Athens Marathon and Half.”
The Athens Virtual Marathon started on November 8 and ended on November 27.
Now they are waiting for the Medal of the Virtual Athens Marathon 2020.
Participants’ data
The runners who took part in this year’s event came mainly from Europe, but also from America, Asia, Africa and Oceania, representing a total of 57 countries.
According to data from the Hellenic Athletics Federation SEGAS, 75% of the runners were Greeks and 25% foreign participants.
Two out of three foreign runners were Europeans and one in three from other continents.
66% of the participants were men and 34% women.
39% of the participants chose the distance of 5 km, 36% stated the 10 km, while one in four marathon runners ran the classic 42,195 m route.
