1047 new coronavirus cases as Greece increases testing; 58 more deaths

New coronavirus infections rose in Greece again after health authorities increased the usual number of tests following decreased testing over Christmas holidays Dec 24-27/28. Authorities announced on Tuesday evening, 1,047 new coronavirus cases and 58 deaths in the past 24 hours. The number of Covid-19 patients intubated in hospitals across the country stands at 458.

Death toll has reached 4,730 and the total cases stand at 136,976.

At the live briefing on Tuesday,health experts said that there are currently 8,500 active cases across the country.

Regarding the vaccinations roll out, they said that “general immunity” will be achieved when over  50% of the population has inoculated.

Areas with high epidemiological load

Head of Civil Protection Nikos Hardalias said that 8 areas continue to have high epidemiological load despite the lockdown.

These areas are:

*Florina

*Keratsini, Drapetsona, Peristeri, Ilion, Acharnes, Zefyri in Piraeus and west Athens

*Kalymnos (island)

He announced the extension of the stricter lockdown restrictions in the municipalities of Elefsina and Aspropoyrgos in western Attica and the municipalities in the Regional Unit of  Kozani (Kozani, Eordia, Voio) until January 6, 2021.

The stricter lockdown is lifted in the municipalities of Mandra (West Attica), Servia and Velvedo (Kozani). Bote that the general lockdown as throughout the country remain in force also in these areas.

According to the official daily bulletin on Tuesday, 5380(3.9%) of the total coronavirus cases are related to travel abroad and 40566 (29.6%) are related to already known infection case.

The remaining infections are without known source.

52.3% of the infected are men.

The number of intubated patients in ICUs stands at 458 from 467 a day earlier. Their average age is 67, among them are 140 women. 80.1% have underlying health problems or are aged over 70.

877 people have been discharged from ICUs since the start of the pandemic in Greece.

Another 58 deaths in the last 24 hours increased death toll to 4730. Of the deceased 1923 (40.7%) were women. The average age of the deceased was 79 and 95.5% of the deceased had an underlying condition or/and was over 70 years old.

Rolling weekly average cases at 651 from 876 last week.

Total tests since begin of the outbreak are 2775021 PCR and 540529 Rapid Ag tests

Tests in the last 24 hours: 15,491.

Positivity PCR+Rapid tests: 3.28%

Daily growth at +0.8%

Of the 1047 new coronavirus cases, 16 were detected at the country’s entry points.

  1. > Positivity PCR+Rapid tests: 3.28%

    False positivity rate for tests is above 5%. So even with zero infections, we would get similar number of positive cases.
