“Low tide” reveals walls of the ancient port of Kyllini in Ionian Sea

The low tide of recent days has revealed the walls of the ancient port of the town of Kyllini, in western Peloponnese. Under normal conditions, the walls of the ancient port at the Ionian Sea are under the water.

According to local media patrisnews.gr, the sea level lowered by 40-45 cm and revealed the walls.

Kyllini was named after the Cyllene a port town of ancient Ilia.

The phenomenon of extreme low tide has been observed across Greece in recent days, allowing also Athenians to walk to an islet which they can normally reach only swimming.

The sea level is expected to return to normal around March 14, the local media notes.
