Α total of 620 asylum seekers at the Kara Tepe municipal facility for refugees and asylum-seekers on the island of Lesvos have been transferred elsewhere on Thursday.
Greece’s Greek Migration and Asylum Minister Notis Mitarakis has said that the camp site will officially return to the municipality of Mytilene on May 6, to be used for municipality purposes.
According to migration and asylum ministry sources, a total of 540 people were transferred from Kara Tepe to KYT, the nearby temporary hosting facility, while another 80 were sent to a hosting facility on the mainland.
The population at KYT, including the recent additions from Kara Tepe, is under 6,000 while the total number of asylum seekers living on Lesvos is 7,200.
