Greek Gov’t weighs “compulsory vaccination”; PM speaks of Covid-free restaurants

Perks for vaccinated citizens and compulsory vaccination against Covid-19 for certain professionals suddenly became high on the agenda in Greece since the last weekend. And pressure for vaccinations increase even with indirect …threats.

Speaking at the Parliament on Tuesday, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis did not rule out the possibility that there might be Covid-free restaurants and bars as from upcoming autumn.

“Nobody can forbid a food service businessman to accept only vaccinated customers,” the PM said.

At the same time he signaled the “compulsory vaccination” of health care workers at hospitals and seniors’ nursing homes.

Earlier during a meeting with the President of the Hellenic Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, the issue of the compulsory vaccination for certain professionals came up.

“The constitution does not give anyone the right to put others’ lives at risk,” Sakellaropoulou stressed adding  that “beyond protecting public health, the constitution in no way recognizes a person’s right to jeopardize another’s life and health.
Sakellaropoulou served as president of Greece’s top administrative court, the Council of State, before becoming President of the country.

Health Minister Vassilis Kikilias reiterated on Tuesday the government policy line on Tuesday that possible perks for  vaccinated citizens is something that “will be done after all citizens have [been given] access to the vaccines. It is not about punishing the rest, but about the possibility of rewarding or facilitating those who have been vaccinated on the basis of social and economic activity.”

He added that the debate on extra privileges will take place in autumn after the tourism season is over.

“We will end the tourist season, we will look for incentives and in the autumn we will decide what will happen to those who are not vaccinated,” Kikilias said. He added that he believes that “the society will of its own accord push the rest to get vaccinated. Society cannot be shut down for another winter. It is not a game. Human lives are still being lost.”

PS Of course, the government cannot make distinctions between vaccinated and not vaccinated citizens during the tourism season as it allows not vaccinated tourists to live their myth in Greece.

As for the Covid-free restaurants, businessmen will most likely be like “Oh, we had the Smoke-free facilities” in the past.

Should healthcare workers be vaccinated?

    • If you rounded people up and forced them to be vaccinated that would be against the human rights act. The decision whether to get vaccinated or not must be voluntary.

Having a law that you cannot engage in certain activities unless you are vaccinated, however, is perfectly reasonable. Children have to be vaccinated in Greece order to attend school. That is done to protect other children. While not enshrined in law, in the UK many (most? all?) healthcare trusts require front-line healthcare workers to be vaccinated against Hepatitis B as part of their health and safety checks. That is done to protect their patients. We have many laws that limit what we can and cannot do in order to protect others and we never even think about them.

For those who object I presume they would be perfectly happy to have someone who was a carrier of typhoid working in their local taverna kitchen because, if you stopped them, it would infringe their human rights?

  1. at this point , keeping my fingers crossed that the visa bureacracy gets moving… to emigrate, likely forever. this is my country, it is a painful decision, but without even firing a shot, it has been conquered by psychopathic corporations and their enforcers. at least in the 40s we resisted.
the oldest civilization on the continent, but theyre throwing us all into the meat grinder, for what? package deal tourism, wind farms, and the tingly excitement of absolute power in digital dictatorship?

  2. when will they build ghettos for these dangorous healthy people without symptoms – rejecting to live as pharma rats for the rest of their lifes? fence around and big signs “risk of epidemic”.

  3. Wauw ktg, do you accept such virus-deniers here? I think their sources might be non-existing! They probably looked at non-official websites like the WEF etc… These conspiracy theorists probably think that Klaus Schwab is the new Hitler. They have to understand that this is about our health, nothing else!
By the way, I got my vax invitation and get AZ. As this is not an mRNA vaccine, I will accept it. So it is official now: I’m not anti-vax, as you called me earlier.
Come on: spread the fear !!!!!!!

  4. This is an absolute Disgrace and I’m disgusted at this kind of attitude by the Greek government. What has happened to Greece??

  5. It’s alarming how many people are actually for this. I get moderated a lot as my opinions may not be popular, but I just really hope EVERYONE realizes this: What can be done to one person/group, can be done to absolutely anyone. That is the reason I fight against human rights violations like this so ferociously.
I’m gonna repeat that because it’s so important and regardless of your views on covid things, everyone should stop and really really think about it. What can be done to one person/group, can be done to absolutely anyone. And they never stop at just one group they dislike. There’s always more. This is an extremely dangerous path and we must fight it

    • I feel Greek Government are right..everyone SHOULD be vaccinated…but they cannot force this, unless unvaccinated people have basic services withdrawn as a “threat”. I chose to come and live in a “safe” country 8 years ago when I retired, yet now it seems to be a divided country…”we want the tourist’s money..but not the tourists if they’re not vaccinated!”….YOU CAN’T HAVE BOTH!!!! I spent 3 months in Russia from February,,tested to go in, tested to come back..but I would have felt a lot safer if vaccinated!! I am vaccinated now and feel safe…ish! Still too many tourists not following the “rules”…! I look forwards to going back to Russia in November and, if the take up doesn’t improve in Greece, I might stay there!! Friendly place…Greece, yes….opinionated place..Greece, yes….safe place…Greece, undecided!!!!

      • Well if you’re vaccinated and trust that the vaccine works then you should be able to feel safe no matter what. If others don’t take the vaccine, it shouldn’t bother you. You’re safe after all. I moved here 4 years ago and absolutely love the country but if this dangerous road of human rights violations continues, I will be forced to leave. That would suck

  6. Maybe they should then consider over riding the AMKA issue and offering everyone the vaccine without the fiasco of applying online for an AMCA number being told its being processed and then hearing nothing, people have only so much patience

    • Mike Ryan you are SO right!! Its time they chucked the temporary AMKA idea in the bin, and just get on with vaccinating everyone. They say that every application has now been processed, so why are so many of us still waiting?
Time to just open the doors, and let everyone who wants it get the vaccine, those who dont, well, thats their choice, but the more of us who are vaccinated, the safer everyone else will be.GET ON WITH IT!!!
