Delta Variant in Greece: Which age group infected, which regions

The Delta variant of Covid-19 is a cause of concern also for Greece’s epidemiologists who see a resurgence of the coronavirus and the government tries to get the whole situation under control through vaccination.

The 2,108 new coronavirus cases confirmed in 24 hours on Thursday hit a record number of daily infections in the last 45 days. Coronavirus cases more than doubled in one week and the seven-day rolling average now stands at 1,081 cases per day.

The new epidemic wave strongly affects Attica, Crete and the northern Aegean.

The coming weeks are particularly critical, and although there is currently no pressure on the Health System, it is likely that the epidemic will “pass” to older people, especially in areas with low vaccination rates,” said professor of Pediatrics – Infectious Diseases of the Medical School of Athens and member of the Committee of Experts, Vana Papaevangelou at the live briefing on Thursday.

The Delta variant

Young people, Greeks and the unvaccinated ones are those infected with the Delta variant strain in the country.

Papaevangelou said at the briefing that 70% of the cases in which the Delta variant was detected are under 40 years old, 84% are Greeks and 5%-6% are Russian visitors.

According to the available data from the samples of the mutated Indian strain that were analyzed, it has been found that 13% of the cases that had the Delta strain needed hospitalization. None of the infected had completed their vaccination.

Geographic distribution

The regional units where the majority of the Delta variant was detected are Attica and Heraklio, Crete.

According to the genomic report published by the National Health Care Organization EODY on Thursday, of the 121 Delta variant cases in total, detected were in:

58 Heraklio

39 Attica

5 Thessaloniki

4 at the Athens international airport “Eleftherios Venizelos”

4 Lesvos

3 Rethymno

2 Paros

Each 1 Larissa, Evia, Achaia, Corinth, Halkidiki, Argolida

The Delta strain has been identified in 0.67% of the samples analyzed as a whole.

The British Alpha mutation has been identified in 80.35% of the samples, the Nigerian mutation B.1.1.318 in 17.57% and the South African B.1.351 in 0.64%.

It is already here. Get vaccinated and use good judgment when in public spaces.

Jane, I was waiting forever and someone told me to keep reapplying. One day I applied 4 times. I got my AMKa notice 2 days later. When I went to get the vaccine last Thursday, the man checking me in said it is good we got the number by applying less than 10 times. Then he said “this is Greece” Good luck
