Greece and Turkey express common stance on refugee pressure from Afghanistan

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed that Greece and Turkey face the same challenge regarding the refugee pressure that may arise from recent developments in Afghanistan.

During a 30-minute-long phone conversation on Friday evening, the two leaders also agreed that the neighboring countries of Afghanistan must be supported, so that Afghan refugees stay as close as possible to their homes.

Greece and Turkey have both insisted that they cannot afford to carry any additional refugee weight.

Mitsotakis and Erdogan also discussed the climate change, on the occasion of the multiple fires that burned in Greece and Turkey recently, a weather challenge that all Mediterranean countries face. The environment is one of the sectors offering Greece and Turkey opportunities for close collaboration, and was one of the items on the agenda of two deputy ministers talks in early summer.
