Four big summer fires burned 16% of forest land in Attica (MAP)

Recent wildfires in Attica have burned 16 percent of its forest, the National Observatory of Athens said on Thursday.

The fires were estimated to have burned about 240,000 acres, of which 186,000 acres are forest land.

According to the National Observatory analysis about one sixth of the total forest land are estimated to have been burned during the fires that swept Attica in – Keratea, Varibobi and Vilia – in August and Gerania Mountain earlier in summer.

Marked green on the map are the forest land in the Regional Unit of Attica and marked red the burned areas.

The National Observatory of Athens has used the European Union’s database CORINE and recent detailed satellite records
