Greece: 2,125 coronavirus cases, 31 deaths, 331 intubations; distribution

Greece’s health authorities announced on Thursday 2,125 new coronavirus cases and 31 deaths in the past 24 hours.  The number of intubated Covid-patients in hospital Intensive Care Units slightly decreased to 331.

Authorities imposed mini lockdown in three regional units in northern Greece and extended restriction in others. More details on a separate post.

At the weekly Live Briefing on Thursday, health authorities said that the pandemic situation seems to stabilize, however, it shows an increase of 11% to 36% in regional units of northern Greece.

There is double increase of infections in Xanthi, eastern Macedonia, and a 60-percent increase in Kozani, western Macedonia, Professor for Child Epidemiology and member of Epidemiologists’ Committee Vana Papaevangelou said.

She expressed concern over the infections increase and the low vaccination coverage.

She added that hospital admissions in northern Greece are more than the discharges.

She said that one in three infections affects children aged below 18 and stressed that the Delta variant strikes also younger people. The average age of new infections is 34 years old.

Papaevangelou added that transmission is higher among family members and during events, while it is smaller in work places.

They added that vaccinations are doing better and stressed that the overwhelming majority of Covid-patients in ICUs are unvaccinated.

Oof the 812 random samples 745 were identified as with the Delta Variant.
