Greece’s health authorities announced on Friday 3,643 new coronavirus cases and 55 deaths in the past 24 hours. The number of Covid-patients intubated in hospital ICUs stands at 392.
The situation in Thessaloniki, the country’s second biggest city, is dramatic with hospitals to have reached their capacity in ICU beds for Covid-patients.
Speaking to Skai TV on Friday morning, Nikos Kapravelos, head of the ICUs at the Papanikolaou hospital Nikos Kapravelos said that the fourth coronavirus wave has seen a sharp rise in intubations, adding that people in their 40s – all of them unvaccinated – are now being admitted to ICUs.
“All ICU beds are occupied at the moment,” he said, adding that providers currently have to perform intubations in operating rooms where patients are left without oversight from a physician.

Since the pandemic began, Greece has confirmed 734,778 infections (daily change: +0.5%). Of the confirmed cases of the last 7 days, 153 infections are related to travel from abroad and 2,837 to other confirmed cases.
55 deaths recorded in the last 24 hours brought the total of pandemic victims to 15,856. Of these, 95.4% had an underlying condition and/or were aged 70 or over.
392 patients are on ventilators in hospitals – from 391 a day earlier. Their median age is 65 years and 80.4% have an underlying condition and/or are aged 70 or over.
Of the total, 337 (85.97%) are unvaccinated or partly vaccinated and 55 (14.03%) are fully vaccinated.
3,303 Covid patients have been discharged from ICUs since the pandemic began.
295 Covid-19 patients were admitted to hospital in the last 24 hours (daily change: +2.08%). The average admission of patients with Covid-19 to hospitals over the last 7 days was 257.
The median age of new infections is 39 years (range: 0.2 to 106 years), while the median age of the deceased is 78 (range: 0.2 to 106 years).

It would be very easy to reduce the pressure on ICU beds and ventilators. Anybody who has had the opportunity to receive a vaccine but refused it discharge them and send them home. Their decision – their problem.
