Daily coronavirus cases remain high also on Monday with Greece’s health authorities to have announced 36,246 confirmed cases in the past 24 hours among the regional units, Attica and Thessaloniki lead, followed by Achaia in Peloponnese and Heraklio on Crete.
Health authorities announced on Monday also 78 Covid-related deaths in the last 24 hours, while the number of intubated Covid-patients in hospitals has decreased to 615.
At the weekly Live Briefing on vaccinations, the president of the National Vaccinations Committee Professor Maria Theodoridou said that those with the booster shot are largely protected from infection with the Omicron variant, while those with just 2 doses of vaccines are not.
She cited a study conducted in the UK among 815 people.
Refiring to recent issues where Rapid tests show negative while the patient is positive on PCR tests, President of EODY Theoklis Zaoutis reassured that also Rapid tests are reliable.
He added that 70% of the infections in 5 regional units are of the Omicron variant.

“Refiring to recent issues where Rapid tests show negative while the patient is positive on PCR tests, President of EODY Theoklis Zaoutis reassured that also Rapid tests are reliable.”
The Lateral Flow test is less sensitive than the PCR test so it is completely normal that some people, with low viral loads, test negative on Lateral Flow and positive on PCR. The people most likely to pass the virus on are those with high viral loads so the Lateral Flow test is good for screening high risk people, e.g. in a work environment, because it is fast. PCR is good as a diagnostic tool where people have symptoms that may or may not be COVID.
While it is not certain, the fact that Omicron seems to be more able to infect people who are vaccinated or have had COVID before than happened with previous variants BUT they are having very mild symptoms suggests that they could have low viral loads, which could account for more negative Lateral Flow tests.
