“Greece will participate in the effort to support the Ukrainian people, directly with technical and humanitarian assistance to Poland and other countries,” Migration Minister Notis Mitarakis said on Saturday. At the same time, he stressed that refugees from Ukraine are “true refugees” as they are fleeing war.
Speaking to Skai TV, Mitarakis pointed out that the refugees leaving Ukraine “are war refugees, they are the real refugees.”
He added “if we as a country have to take a number of people, we are willing to do it in cooperation with the EU. The costs will be covered by Europe.”
On Friday, Foreign Minister Nikso Dendias said that there was an evacuation plan for Greek nationals and and the some 100,000 ethnic Greeks in the Ukraine.
To summarize: Greece will offer aid for Ukrainian refugees in the countries they flee to and is willing to take some if the EU covers the cost.
At the same time, it is willing to take in the country ethnic Greeks.
