Some 50,000 lightning bolts fell in Greece in less than 24 hours, as powerful thunderstorms struck large part of the eastern of continental Greece and the islands of the Aegean Sea for a second day on Wednesday, August 24, 2022.
According to the data published by the National Observatory of Athens and its meteo service, the highest rain level of 102mm was recorded by the station of Kavontoro.
In Attica, the highest level was recorded in Agios Stefanos in the north with 63mm.
At the same time, the lightning tracking system Zeus identified 48,845 lightening strikes over Greece by 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
Thursday is forecast to be another day, the fifth since Monday, with rain-and thunderstorms in many parts of the country.
According to meteo.gr:
-Rain and storms are expected in continental Greece and the islands of the Ionian and the Aegean Sea.
-Intense weather phenomena in parts of eastern Sterea and Peloponnese, possibly high volume of rain and flooding.
-Local storms in parts of central and eastern Macedonia will be possibly accompanied by smaill-sized hail.
Significant rainfalls marked Orange, hail possibility marked Yellow.

These storms were unbelievable. I am camping in Xalkidiki, end of second leg, and we had a thunderstorm which lasted 12 hours with intense and nonstop thunder and lightning right above us. I don’t think I have ever experienced so much lighting and rain for so many hours! It struck an antenna for mobile service and wifi, and the whole area was without internet or phone for two days, which meant no one could use their bank card to pay for things (POS not working). The campsite next to us (reported about in another KTG article) had a huge destruction and all of its trees and dirt, etc, washed up on the beach of Kalamitsi.
I still can’t believe I was in a tent through all of this. Really amazing overall.
in a tent? w-o-w! is the campsite under water the Kalamitsi camping?
No, thank God. They had a pump that sent the water to the sea. But during the storm the place was flooded and muddy and many people got washed out and left. A tree fell down. I was lucky because I was up a small incline. The water roared past me. The nearby campsite of Christina was destroyed, and there were rocks and tree branches on the local roads.
