Greece’s National Meteorological Service EMY upgraded the recent weather warning to Red Alert on Wednesday as the forecast is of extreme weather phenomena.
According to emergency bulletin issued at Wednesday noon, EMY noted that the warning of August 22 is still valid for most of the areas with heavy rainfalls and thunderstorms that will be accompanied by high frequency of lightning, hail and thunderstorms. During the phenomena, enhanced gust winds are expected.
However, according to the latest forecast data, the current Weather Deterioration Warning is upgraded to an Emergency Bulletin of Dangerous Weather Phenomena, due to high amounts of rain and the rapidity of the phenomena, from tonight (Wednesday, August 24), until tomorrow night (Thursday, August 25, 2022, EMY noted.
Areas forecast to be affected by the Dangerous Weather Phenomena are:
A. Sea-coastal parts of eastern Macedonia and Thrace and the islands of the northern Aegean Sea -mainly Limnos,
Samothraki and Thassos- from early Wednesday evening until the morning hours of Thursday.
B. Central Macedonia, mainly the prefectures of Halkidiki, Pieria and Imathia as well as the coastal parts of the prefecture
of Thessaloniki, from Wednesday evening until the midday hours of Thursday.
C. Sporades islands, Thessaly -mainly the prefectures of Magnesia and Larissa -, central and northern Evia and the northern northern parts of eastern Sterea -mainly the prefecture of Fthiotida- from Wednesday night until Thursday night.

Torrential rains with strong thunderstorms have been striking several parts of Greece since Tuesday, causing flooding and agricultural damages.
Main roads in Greek capital Athens were flooded from Tuesday afternoon onward, as reportedly 40mm of rain fell in just one hour. The situation is not much better on Wednesday where heavy rain-showers hit on and off Athens and Attica. Most affected is Dionysos in northern Athens, where the Fire Service reportedly received many calls to pump water out of flooded homes and businesses and rescue motorists trapped in waters.

Also hit by the bad weather were the Cyclades islands, with landslides on Santorini and flooded streets on Mykonos, Tinos and Paros.
