Greece protests NATO congratulating Turkey for “Asia Minor Disaster” in 1922

The permanent representative of Greece in the NATO submitted a protest note to the Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg early Wednesday afternoon. Reason for the protest was a tweet by the NATO Allied Land Command in which it congratulated Turkey for its 100. Anniversary of Independence.

Note that the Command is based in Izmir, Turkey.

What Turkey celebrates on August 30 as “Victory Day” is the Battle in Dumlupinar, Kutahya, It was the last battle in the Greco-Turkish War (1919–1922) that ended up in the crushing defeat of the Greek Army. The battle triggered the “Asia Minor Disaster” where over one million Greeks run for their lives and thousands were killed in 1922.

In a statement, the Greek Foreign Ministry pointed out that the Permanent Representative of Greece to NATO made a strict protest to the Secretary General of NATO, stressing that “the post in question is not only inappropriate but also unacceptable.”

At the same time, the Greek military authorities in NATO will proceed with a similar protest note to the Supreme Headquarters of NATO (SHAPE), to which the Headquarters of the Ground Forces also belongs.

Later on Wednesday, the specific tweet was reportedl removed form the @LANDCMD account.

Note that both countries are NATO members and that the twitter account @LANDCMD has a calendar of religious and national holidays, sending congratulation tweet on every occasion.

  1. “Stoltenberg’s first steps into politics came in his early teens, when he was influenced by his sister Camilla, who at the time was a member of the then Marxist–Leninist group Red Youth. Opposition to the Vietnam War was his triggering motivation. Following heavy bombing raids against the North Vietnamese port city of Hai Phong at the end of the Vietnam War, he participated in protest rallies targeting the United States Embassy in Oslo. On at least one occasion embassy windows were broken by stone-throwing protesters. Several of Stoltenberg’s friends were arrested by the police after these events”- Wikipedia

  2. Don’t worry. It won’t be long before Turkey ends up leaving NATO (maybe even before NATO and the EU collapse!) and then Greece can publicly Turkey as an enemy. The real enemies of Greece, however, have been Schäuble, Merkel, Dragi, LaGarde and a few other banksters.
